French Cardinal Paul Poupard Turns 80, Cardinal Electors Down to 106

On August 30, 2010, French Cardinal Priest Paul Poupard turned 80, thus ceasing to be a cardinal elector. Cardinal Poupard, a curialist, most recently as the President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, till his retirement (upon exceeding 75) in 2007, was created a cardinal deacon in may 1985.

The College of Cardinals since May 4, 2010 has been at 179. But now the number of cardinal-electors, those that can participate in a conclave to elect the next pope, is down to 106 -- from the maximum permissible 120.
